JUIT — Rethinking sustainable frozen delivery

Philip Jäger

Philip Jäger

At the beginning of 2023, we started working with JUIT, an innovative FoodTech company for sustainable, healthy and shock-frozen meals. Since its founding, JUIT has placed great emphasis on avoiding unnecessary packaging materials and purchasing regional and seasonal ingredients in order to minimize environmental impact right from the point of purchase.

Frozen Delivery Challenges

The delivery of frozen products is associated with particular challenges. On the one hand, these deliveries are significantly more expensive than normal parcel shipments. On the other hand, delivery must be as easy and pleasant as possible for customers, as frozen shipments cannot be left in front of the door or left with the neighbour.

Traditional methods of securing the cold chain rely on dry ice and insulation material, which significantly limits sustainability potential and requires large quantities of packaging material. Another problem: Undelivered packages must be discarded frequently because the cold chain is interrupted and the products spoil.

The solution: Urbify Frozen Delivery for JUIT

Together with JUIT, we have developed an innovative solution: the Urbify Frozen Delivery. From our location in Ettlingen to our Berlin hub, we provide efficient, sustainable and reliable frozen delivery. Thanks to our system, JUIT can completely dispense with insulation materials and dry ice. The frozen dishes are packed in thin boxes made from 95% recyclable cardboard and handed over to us.

By reducing over 90% of insulation and packaging materials, together with JUIT, we are taking a decisive step towards sustainable frozen delivery.

Optimum delivery times and first-class customer experience

To further improve customer experience, we offer two flexible delivery time windows. Our telecommunications vans deliver JUIT Frozen dishes to all Berlin postal code areas every day — either between 12:00 and 17:00 (ideal for delivery to the workplace) or between 18:00 and 22:00 for classic evening delivery.

In the morning, customers receive an SMS and/or email with an individual one-hour delivery window. This makes it possible to precisely plan the arrival of the delivery.

Success rate and sustainability

Our solution is convincing: In the last six months, we achieved an initial delivery rate of 98.05%. If you cannot find a customer, our drivers will call you first. If personal delivery is not possible even then, the customer will be hit again on the way back. Only in exceptional cases does a delivery go back to the warehouse, where it continues to be stored at -18 degrees and delivered again the next day.

Outlook: Rollout in other cities

After a successful pilot phase, we are already planning to roll out sustainable frozen delivery to other major German cities.
